“Jay and Boo is a series of paintings that I started creating in 2002. It is about a boy, Jay, and his dog, Boo, who travel the universe looking for wisdom and some of the answers to the questions of everyday life. As an aside, they’re also looking for a suitable female companion for Boo. The dog appears as a different breed in each painting throughout the series to show that it is not unchanged by their experiences.
When I started the series, my intention was to represent the characters as drawings living in a painting, and I conceived the final image as more of an abstraction. However, the idea evolved over time and, as the artist, I have told their story rather than imposing my own preconceptions upon them.” Monika Ruiz
